Fun for the Fam Halloween Picks

Halloween should be for all ages; this list includes some spooky movies for a variety viewers, with content warnings and age recommendations from Common Sense Media. They will ascend from youngest recommended audience to oldest. I like to remind people that horror does not have to be super scary or gory to be good, there are plenty of spooky movies made for younger audiences! Plus, everyone has to start somewhere! Remember these ratings are subjective, so if you want to be more thorough, you can do additional research. Happy watching!

The Nightmare Before Christmas

This is a classic Halloween movie that is good for the whole family. Although there are some creepier bits like characters taking off their heads, nothing too scary for younger children. The characters are also fun to watch, and the themes are overall positive. Common Sense rates this for ages 7+.

Hocus Pocus

This classic Disney movie is mainly a comedy that takes place on Halloween. But don’t let that fool you, there is plenty of spooky witchcraft in this movie. There is a zombie character whose head falls off, but that is the extent of the scariness. There is a young romance in this movie and being from the ninties there are some outdated jokes and comments. Common Sense rates this a 10+.

ParaNorman

This movie features animated zombies that could scare younger viewers. There are some comments that are a little more mature, but nothing more than other family movies. This movie is super fun and spooky and great for Halloween. Common Sense rates this 10+.

Coraline

Similar to ParaNorman, this film is kid friendly with positive role models but can be a little scary for the youngest of viewer. This classic has many whimsical parts that can sometimes be borderline uncanny. Common Sense rates this an age 10+ movie.

Monster House

This movie is in a similar vein as the other animated movies on this list, however this one has more suggestive and mature comments, some of which may go over kids’ heads. This one could also be considered scarier than some of the others. Common Sense rates this 10+.

The Wolf Man

I just watched this recently, and although I have not seen the other Universal Monster movies, I would assume they would be at similar level of appropriateness. The main issue with this movie is its outdated view on women and Romani people. Besides that, it is not too violent or scary but still has that classic Halloween feel. Common Sense rates this 10+.

Killer Klowns From Outer Space

This is a cult classic and a great one for Halloween. It is super fun, silly, and whimsical, and great to keep kids entertained. Although this is more of a horror movie, none of the effects are too gory, and all the kills are pretty silly. There is a couple making out in the beginning but nothing too suggestive. Common Sense does not have this on their site, but I would rate it for 11+.

Lights Out

This movie is definitely made for older audiences. It is scarier, and has darker themes, including suicide, giving it a Common Sense ranking of 14+. However, I think this horror movie could be for 13+ depending on the kid. This could be a good one to watch as a family with teens.

Trick ‘r Treat

This anthology movie takes place on Halloween and is perfect for October. This one I would say is more mature than the last one, mainly due to some female nudity (women with their tops off and torso fully exposed in brief clips). Common Sense rates this 16+ but I think that more mature 14 and 15 year olds could watch this with adult supervision.

Clown in a Cornfeild

This takes place in the fall and is perfect for the season. This horror movie was made with younger viewers in mind. Common Sense rates it as 16+, but I definitely think it is watchable for 15 year olds as well. There are some teens making out, and a bit of gore, but I think this is a good one for families with a mix of older and younger teens.

The Ring

Just like the other two, Common Sense gives this movie a 16+ rating, but I think it is suitable for mature 14 and 15 year olds. It can definitely be a bit scary and have some darker themes, but is a classic movie and action packed. This movie is not my favorite but has a huge following so I would recommend checking it out.
