We have finally entered Halloween season! Here is a list of some of the most iconic Halloween movies, as well as some of my personal favorites. The list ascends roughly in order of scariness, gore, and intensity. Stay tuned for the next post where I will share a list of Halloween movies for the whole family! Until then, grab a cup of warm apple cider, some spooky pajamas, and get ready to be frightened!

Trick r Treat (2007)
This one is super fun and gives goosebumps vibes. Takes place on Halloween night and features 4 different stories in an anthology style. There is some nudity, but besides that, it may be suitable for viewers in the younger teens.

Fright Night (1985)
This is a good one if you are looking for a silly 80’s movie that’s still got that creepy factor with some good horror aspects.

Night of the Demons (1988)
This is another good chaotic 80’s movie. Definitely strange and features some interesting special effects, but super fun and takes place on Halloween! This movie does have a character who makes some racist remarks.

Halloween (1978)
One of the most iconic horror movies of all time, Halloween reinforced the emerging slasher genre, producing both a notable final girl and a notable killer.

The Witch (2015)
Definitely more psychological and atmospherically per Robert Eggers style. On the slower paced side but still a good one.

Fear Street 1994 (2021)
This one definitely has that modern Gen Z vibe, but its full of fun and some good gore and killers. The soundtrack to this movie is also incredible.

Scream VI (2022)
This extension of the iconic franchise takes place on Halloween weekend. Featuring the new cast with some returning characters.

Evil Dead (1985)
This is a great spooky movie with awesome practical efects. For even more fun watch the entire trilogy, maybe even add on the modern remake and Evil Dead Rise (2023).

The Conjuring (2013)
One of the most iconic supernatural possession movies. Based on a true story and full of characters to root for.

Hell House LLC (2015)
This found footage takes place in a haunted house. Lots of tension and lots of scares.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)
This is a twist on a supernatural movie with some creative plotlines and details.

House of 1000 Corpses (2003)
A Rob Zombie cult classic with crazy editing and even crazier gore. This film is fun but also quite graphic. There are some scenes with sexual harassment that can be a bit jarring.

Terrifier (2016)
Not everyone’s favorite, but a good one for the Halloween season. Lots of gore, and not such a coherent plot. But if you are down for a sort of low budget indie movie with some gross gore this is a good pick.
